Intent: To identify concerns on the weakness of the scope of restrictions proposed in the legislation, the wide discretion allowed for under it, and the Taoiseach's comments in the Irish Times on 9th of June indicating his negative views on the ultimate relevance of the bill in an EU context
Details: Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2026
Intent: Suggested amendments to the proposed bill to increase Oireachtas control and scrutiny around the measures, and to address concerns on: the impact of ratification of trade agreements and exposure to the State and taxpayers from such agreements; the regulatory chill effect on progressive policy and regulation within Ireland, the EU and other countries who are Party to such agreements - given the Investor State Dispute Clauses in such agreements. Also highlighting wider civil society concerns.
Intent: To welcome the announcement by the EU Commission that Brazilian meat imports will be banned in the EU from September 3rd, unless Brazil demonstrates compliance withe the bloc's rules on antimicrobial resistance.::To highlight that during an IFA and IFJ investigation into Brazilian meat last year any amount of antibiotics were freely available without any details of the animal type or symptoms, a prescription or farm identifier.::To highlight that the Brazilian authorities do not have a good track record of compliance with EU auditors and trade requirements as evidenced by the finding of the DG Sante inspections.::To emphasise that there must be a comprehensive database of all bovine animals in the country to allow prescribing of antibiotics for farm animals and the infrastructure must then be built around that to incoproprate prescribing, dispensing and treatment records similar to what is in the EU.
